Innovation is a modern concept to define the flow of inventions that have so far determined the so-called Progress of Humanity. And innovation has always happened from below.
That is, all the inventions useful to humanity have been developed by the Users, who, frustrated by the lack of a technique, of a product, have created a solution that was then used by others.
That is, innovation has always developed from the level in which there were needs (to work better, for well-being, etc.).
.
The problem of the failure of innovation in its current form is precisely that it is in contrast with the original model of innovation (of the Progress):
today innovation is planned and designed from above
(big companies and public institutions),
and in kind of process the real needs
to be satisfied with new inventions
are not grasped.
These institutions are not only able to produce truly innovative ideas (of truly useful and sustainable innovation); but they not even are able to grasp the goodness of new ideas that are presented to them (such ideas are discarded for a question in part of mentality, but also of “interests” of a market that defends its status quo based on the sale of non-own-useful products).
< see Crowd-driven Innovation / Crowdsourcing>
Even top-level innovations, like the airplane, have been developed bottom-up.
The fact is that innovations like those of the airplane could not be developed by the incumbent, the established producers, because:
● the great producers of the time had no interest in developing a new means of transport (they already produced means of transport – cars, trains , ships); their interest was to maintain the status quo.
● anyhow they were limited by linear mindset°, which led them to consider the idea of being able to fly madness.
Where there was no real physical need of the Crowd, such as for telephone or radio, innovation was nevertheless developed by (not related to the business) who wanted to realize their Vision.
< see The great Firms are not able to develop disruptive innovation within them>
The need to resume the original path of the bottom-up development of Innovation (of Real Progress) is highlighted by the emergence of new major trends such as Crowdsourcing: people have reached a point of unsustainability of their conditions that they start spontaneously, bottom-up (with small Start Up, or forms of self-organization of the Crowd to meet specific needs) solutions to satisfy these needs.
Resuming this mode of innovation today means
inserting users (directly!)
in the product design process.

This is possible thanks to tools and practices developed in recent years that are bringing a deep disruption in production and distribution (Makers, Proximity Market, etc … )
